Malinga: A Brushed Display Font That Brings Texture to Branding
Testing Malinga Across Brand Touchpoints
Logo Design: On the bakery logo, Malinga looked great in a dark charcoal on a cream background. It gave the brand a warm, approachable identity. The textured strokes added visual depth without being distracting. However, I noticed that the font’s roughness can sometimes cause letters to blend at smaller sizes, so it’s best used in larger formats like signage or digital headers.
Packaging Mockups: Applied to a mockup of brown kraft paper bags and labels, Malinga felt right at home. It complemented the organic, handmade aesthetic the client was aiming for. Just keep in mind that if your packaging includes a lot of competing textures or patterns, Malinga might get lost in the mix.
Business Cards: Printed in a metallic foil finish, Malinga made a bold impression. But again, legibility dropped slightly on smaller text sizes. For business cards, I’d recommend using it only for the company name or tagline, not for contact info or URLs.
Social Media Layouts: On Instagram stories and Pinterest graphics, Malinga was a standout. Its rough edges gave the visuals a creative, expressive edge. Paired with clean sans serif fonts for subtext, it created a strong visual hierarchy that drew the eye naturally.
Website Headers: As a webfont, Malinga rendered surprisingly well. The texture holds up on screen, especially at larger sizes. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for body text or navigation menus. Stick to headlines and hero sections for maximum impact.
