Old School Love: A Retro Display Font for Handmade Crafters and Product Designers

As a crafter and small shop owner, I’m always on the hunt for fonts that elevate my product designs without losing that handmade charm. That’s why I keep coming back to Old School Love—a nostalgic, retro display font that brings warmth and personality to every project. Whether I’m creating SVG designs for Cricut or printing labels for my handmade candles, this font adds a touch of vintage flair that customers love.

What Makes Old School Love Stand Out?

Old School Love isn’t just another script font. Its retro design feels like it was pulled straight from a 1950s school notebook—clean yet expressive, playful but still readable. It’s a display font that works beautifully for short phrases, titles, and decorative text without overwhelming the design. The letterforms have a hand-drawn quality that gives every project a personal, artisanal feel. It's perfect for crafters who want to add character without sacrificing clarity.

Perfect for Labels, Tags, and Packaging

One of my favorite uses for Old School Love is in product labeling. Whether it's for soap tags, candle jars, or boutique-style clothing tags, this font gives a polished, boutique-level finish. The bold strokes and clear spacing make it ideal for small stickers and printed labels. I’ve found that even at smaller sizes, the font remains legible—especially important when you're printing on product tags or using cutting machines like Silhouette or Cricut.

Weddings, Invitations, and Seasonal Crafts

For wedding stationery, welcome signs, or birthday invitations, Old School Love adds a vintage, hand-crafted look that feels personal and sincere. I’ve used it for printable wall art and planner pages too, and each time, the font brings a soft, nostalgic energy that complements watercolor illustrations and vintage illustrations beautifully. It also works well for seasonal crafts—think Halloween party invites, holiday gift tags, or Valentine’s Day cards. The font’s versatility makes it a staple in my design toolkit.

Pairing Old School Love with Other Fonts

Font pairing is essential for visual balance, and Old School Love pairs beautifully with clean sans serif fonts like Arial or Montserrat for body text. When I want a more vintage look, I pair it with a serif font like Playfair Display. For a modern twist, I’ll use a minimalist sans serif like Open Sans for subheadings. The contrast between Old School Love and a simpler font helps maintain readability while adding visual interest.

Readability Tips for Real-World Use

While Old School Love shines in display use, it’s best reserved for short text like titles, names, or slogans. I wouldn’t recommend it for long paragraphs or detailed product descriptions. However, for product packaging, signage, and digital printables where a bold, charming look is needed, this font delivers. When using it in SVG or print-at-home formats, I always check the spacing and kerning to ensure it cuts or prints cleanly.

Commercial Use and Licensing

One of the biggest concerns for Etsy sellers and small business owners is font licensing. I appreciate that Old School Love is a commercial font that can be used across a wide range of products—from physical goods like mugs and tote bags to digital downloads and client work. It’s reassuring to know that I can use it in both print and digital formats without worrying about licensing restrictions. Just be sure to double-check the included file formats and any usage guidelines provided by the font creator.

File Formats and Design Features

Old School Love typically comes in standard formats like OTF and TTF, which are compatible with most design software, including Adobe Illustrator, Canva, and Silhouette Studio. Some versions may include alternates, ligatures, or swashes for added customization. Multilingual support is also a plus if you're selling to an international audience or creating printables in different languages.

How Old School Love Enhances Brand Identity

For small business owners, brand consistency is key. Using the same font across product packaging, social media graphics, and printables helps build recognition. Old School Love has become a signature part of my shop’s visual identity. Customers now associate its retro style with the quality and care I put into my handmade products. It’s a font that feels both timeless and fresh, making it a smart choice for any creative business.
